A mysterious fired razed Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital administration block Sunday morning a day after a nurse’s strike was called off in Laikipia County.

Crucial documents were also destroyed.

The fire suspected to have been started by arsonists who gained access to the hospital after damaging an electric fence, destroyed the entire medical superintendent’s offices where crucial hospital and staff documents are stored.

According to Laikipia County Health Chief officer, Timothy Panga, the room where the fire started does not have electrical connection and it is strongly suspected that it was an arsonist act.

Panga noted that the Laboratory which is next to the offices was not destroyed and all the equipment are intact.

He said that all the staff documents in the hospital registry were destroyed, including a CCTV software recently installed at the hospital.

Fire brigades from Laikipia County and Laikipia Air Base assisted in putting off the fire.

The incident happened just a day after a nurse’s strike was called off in Laikipia County.

Panga however delinked the fire with the concluded strike, noting that there were no files relating to the nurses at the destroyed offices.

Laikipia East OCPD, Kipkoech Kirui, said that investigations have been launched into the incident.

Fire brigades from Laikipia County and Laikipia Air Base assisted in putting out the fire while hospital staff who arrived in fear the crucial documents were burnt assisted in salvaging the few items in nearby offices that had not yet caught fire.

Lab attendants who were on duty were rescued and there we no casualties.
