Kenneth Tarus appointed new Kenya Power boss

By KBC Reporter

Kenya Power has appointed Kenneth Tarus as the acting Managing Director and CEO, taking over from outgoing Dr. Ben Chumo, whose term ends on January 7th, 2017.

Chumo has been the MD and CEO since 2014, and has attained the Government’s mandatory retirement age of 60 years.

The Board’s efforts to extend Chumo’s stay in office was thwarted by the Labour Relations Court when it ruled in favor of activist Okiya Omtata’s petition barring the Board from recommending a term extension to the Energy Cabinet Secretary.

Speaking during the announcement, Tarus said he hopes to steer the company to greater heights, and carry on the transformation work Chumo had started.

Kenya Power Chairman, Kenneth Marende, says the Board is confident that everything will run smoothly under Tarus watch, as the recruitment of a substantive CEO begins.

Tarus has over 20 years  experience in leadership and management with five years in the energy sector, including the Rural Electrification Authority. Tarus has served as Kenya Power’s General Manager, Finance for two years.
