Performing theatre artistes my soon benefit from cheaper studio hiring rates after Cabinet Secretary for ICT Joe Mucheru disclosed that talks are underway to upgrade Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) studios.

Mucheru who was speaking in Homa Bay County over the weekend, said talks and plans are ongoing to have KBC studios in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu upgraded and hired out at cheaper rates for artistes to record music or shows.

Though he did not divulge the cost, he said the initiative will be a great incentive especially for budding artistes who want to build a name and a career in the music, television and film industry.

In Kisumu, some recording studios charge 5,000 shillings per song for tracking and recording while guitar and vocal lessons attract a fee of 200 shillings per hour.

Other notable recording studios in Nairobi charge between Shs. 30,000 and Shs. 50,000 per song.

The move will see the fulfillment of a government directive to have 60 per cent of local content broadcast on the local stations.
